NASA’s primary site for the development and operation of manned space missions, including the selection and training of
astronauts. Founded in 1961 and located in Houston, Texas, the Johnson Space Center (JSC) houses the Mission Control for
Space Shuttle flights and a separate control center for the
International Space Station. JSC also conducts major programs related to manned spaceflight,
space medicine, and aviation. Originally, known as the Manned Spacecraft Center, it was renamed the (Lyndon B.) Johnson Space Center, on February 17, 1973, after the President who, earlier in his career, recommended a manned lunar landing in response to early Soviet space successes.
